  1. Great pictures, Ken. I have never been to Asbury Park, but my husband and I would take the kids to Wildwood and Ocean City at least once every few years for a long weekend. When I was growing up, my parents would take us to Atlantic City every year until the casinos started taking over. It was a fun time. Thanks for sharing your memories.

I’ve not been to Ashbury Park or any other Jersey boardwalks. Living in the middle of the country, miles away from the ocean, I find the whole concept of boardwalks and their amusement park atmosphere fascinating. Nice photos.

People watching – love this! The amusements look bright and enticing – I guess to draw people in.

America really does go “all out” in the way of entertainment.

  5. Great post. Brings back memories of when I was in the Coast Guard and stationed at Cape May. I used to travel up and down New Jersey. Thanks for sharing.

Ken, this really makes me miss my childhood. I didn’t spend a ton of time at the shore, but I spent enough for this to bring back memories. I used to love the salt water taffy from the little shops. There was a time when my parents visited the shore without me and brought me home a whole box of it.

  7. I’ve been out on the boardwalk in Chicago and managed to catch a play at the Shakespeare theatre there. In my own neck of the woods, there’s a lovely board walk at the Coeur d’Alene resort, but it’s just one that meanders through the marina. No carnival stuff in sight 🙂

Such colourful images! You really capture the flamboyance and festive spirit of the Boardwalk. I imagine you could spend a very full day, playing games, going on rides, having your fortune told! Kind of makes me think of the movie “Beaches” – same boardwalk?

  10. Great pix of Jersey boardwalk Ken. Reminds me a lot of some of our california boardwalks like Venice or Santa Monica pier 🙂

I can’t recall ever having been to a boardwalk: from your photos, it looks like a cross between an amusement park and a shopping mall – is that a fair description?

Speaking of shopping malls, I recently had the opportunity to visit a local shopping mall that I hadn’t been to in years and that has even less ‘personality’ now than it did the last time I was there – maybe I would have had a better time if I could have gone on a Ferris wheel ride. 😉

Ken, thanks for sharing! The post really makes me miss the summer of 2010. The New Jersey’s boardwalks really have their own spirit and particularly Wildwood, even for my four-month stay in the States I understood how much Wildwood means for the most of the Americans born in this part of the States. I wish I could come back even for a few days.

    Thank you once again,
    greetings from Bulgaria,
    Moni
